Book artist and paper engineer Carol Barton will present the magic of pop-ups: a hands-on demonstration on how to cut and fold simple simple structures, along with ideas for their use. — Sat. 4:00 – 4:45

Painterly Screenprinted Flats

Allison Bianco will show the technique of direct ink mixing during the screenprinting process. Since ink is a liquid medium, mixing creates areas of color that resemble ocean ripples and waves. Participants will experiment with their own ink anomaly and create a unique print. — Sat. 3:00 – 3:45 pm

Korean Paper Magic

Imagine combining sheets of paper with nothing but water. Or turning paper into rope to weave into pots. Aimee Lee shares her Fulbright research on Korean papermaking and joomchi (paper felting) and jiseung (paper weaving). Sat. 3:00 – 3:45 pm

Revisiting Rubylith

Pyramid Atlantic Screenprinting Associate Rebecca Katz will show the process of cutting rubylith by hand, exposing it on a screen, and printing the image on paper. Prior to computers Rubylith was the primary medium for creating images, because it completely blocked the UV light. — Sat. 2:00- 2:45 pm

Letterpress with the Globe Poster Collection

MICA’s Mary Mashburn, with an assist from VCU’s David Shields, will letterpress samples from the large collection of historic wooden type from the Globe Collection. This demo is a must-see for designers! —Sat. 1:00-1:45 pm

Reductive Blend Roll Letterpress

Former Pyramid Atlantic Resident Artist Lee Marchalonis will print a a multiple-run reductive image on the Vandercook letterpress using on-press blended inking. This technique allows for complex interactions between printing runs and opportunities for color mixing on the palette and press. — Sun. 1:00-1:45 pm

Screenprinting with Natural Dyes

Denise Bookwalter will mix up screenprinting inks from natural dyes: including preparing the dyestuffs and thickening the consistency, followed by a printing demonstration. The variety of plant and animal based materials for making screenprinting ink for fabric and paper will be covered. — Sun. 1:00-1:45 pm

Excavated Screenprints

Corcoran College of Art + Design professor Dennis O’Neill will present recent projects from students and his Alexandria print studio Handprint Workshop. The new screenprint is a chameleon, borrowing freely from sculpture, painting/digital imagery, and boundless in its possibilities. A printing demonstration will follow. — Sun. 2:00-2:45 pm

From Photoshop to Stone

Pyramid Atlantic Resident Artist Ben Ilka will show the photocopy transfer method and the manipulation of the image post transfer. He will cover basic stone lithography techniques and the printing process, illustrating the unique image qualities. — Sun. 3:00-3:45 pm

Sewing on Paper Tapes
